News RELEASE
Date: SEPTEMBER 29, 2022
(Medicine Hat) On September 21, 2022, the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted to approve the policy, Creating a Business-Friendly Regulatory Environment.
The Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce has been advocating for a reduction in the depth, breadth, and number of regulations that limit business viability for more than 122 years. Originally approved in 2013, the Chamber’s “Municipal Red Tape Reduction” policy moved the needle on a number of processes and regulations through work with members of City Council and administration. Various factors, including a changing municipal environment, called for an update to that policy.
Earlier this year, the Chamber formed a task force comprised of local businesses who had expressed interest in the development of this policy. After meetings and consultations with the task force, committees, and various members, 12 key priority recommendations were identified. The recommendations address matters such as customer service, bylaw administration, permitting, inspections, fees, and other issues.
“The Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce has been diligently working with the City of Medicine Hat for years to find ways to encourage business by reducing excessive regulations. We are looking forward to continuing those conversations with members of City Council, as well as City staff, to ensure we can see meaningful and efficient changes that will ultimately result in the growth of our city,” remarked Scott Lehr, Chamber President.
