[Medicine Hat, AB] A new initiative aimed at improving the cleanliness and vibrancy of Medicine Hat’s downtown core is launching this summer. The Downtown Cleanliness – Casual Labour Program offers short‐term, paid employment while supporting a more welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors. This program creates accessible employment opportunities for people who may face barriers to traditional work, including youth aged 15 and older, individuals who are unemployed or underemployed, and people experiencing housing instability. Through meaningful work that supports downtown cleanliness and beautification, participants have the opportunity to earn income, build connections, and develop a stronger sense of belonging in the community — all while helping create a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming downtown for everyone.

Participants in the program will focus on:

• Litter removal
• Light graffiti removal
• Back alley, business front, and pedestrian walkway cleanup

The program runs Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. until October 23, with four workers hired each morning. Participants will be compensated at a rate of $15 per hour. “This initiative is a great example of how we can support both our community and individuals seeking meaningful employment opportunities,” said Jodie Engbert, General Manager of Employment and Community Programs. “By improving downtown cleanliness, we’re helping create a more inviting space while also providing accessible, short‐term work for those who need it.” The program is funded by the City of Medicine Hat and delivered in partnership with the YMCA Employment Centre, which brings expertise in workforce development and community support.
